GUEST SPEAKERS

MR. PETER VENISON HOTELIER AND AUTHOR

Peter Venison is a graduate of The University of Surrey. UK. At the age of 26 Venison was the youngest Manager of a deluxe hotel in London, The Carlton Tower. At the age of 29 he joined Sol Kerner in establishing Southern Sun Hotels in South Africa, as General Manager and latterly. Managing Director. During this time, he was responsible for opening and operating properties in the multi hotel chain, including the mega resort, Sun City.

In 1978 Venison moved to the USA where he became President of Hotel Properties of America, before being recalled to South Africa to take charge of the expanded hotel and casino chain, then known as Sun International, with properties in Africa, Indian Ocean. Middle East, and France. As the company expanded further it listed on the New York stock exchange and Venison took on additional responsibility of Vice President Operations for Atlantis (Bahamas) and The One and Only hotel chain of deluxe resorts. Upon retirement, 20 years ago, Venison served as a board director for Togo Sun in South Africa (80 hotels/12 casinos) and MAF in the Middle East (hotels and shopping malls).

Venison has written several books on hotel management, which have been widely read within the industry. In 2017 Venison was honoured by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth for his work for charity in the international arena.

 

MR. CORIN STAVARACHE DIRECTOR OF SALES, KIMPTON FITZROY LONDON

Corin Stavarache graduated from HTMi Hotel and Tourism Management Institute Switzerland with a BSc (Hons.) Degree in International Hotel and Tourism Management from Ulster University, U.K. in 2013. Since graduating Corin worked for the Mandrian Oriental Hotel Group in Geneva. He then moved to China and worked for the Swisstouches Hotels & Resorts for several months. Thereafter, he moved to London, UK and worked for various Marriott Hotels & Resorts properties in sales position, them moving into position of Assistant Director of Sales at Nobu Hotel Shoreditch. For the past two years, Corin is the Director of Sales at the Kimpton Fitzroy London. Corin is married, and has one young daughter.

 

DR. ROSS TINSLEY PROGRAMME LEADER FOR UNDERGRADUATE TOURISM AT EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY

Ross is a lecturer in the Tourism Subject Group at the Business School, Edinburgh Napier University. As an academic he has research interests in festival and events, small tourism businesses and destination development. He primarily lectures in destination marketing and management but is also more broadly interested in tourism, society and visual culture. Within the subject group he has been Programme Leader for Undergraduate Tourism and currently serves as Year 2 Tutor. Externally he has long-running positions on the executive committees for the Association of Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE) and the Tourism Society, Scotland. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Ross’s research primarily focuses on destination development through entrepreneurship and cultural consumption. His current work centres on post-secularism in festivals and events. He has also researched and published on small tourism businesses and destination development as part of his PhD. He has published in a wide range of well-known journals in the field including Tourism Management, the International Journal of Hospitality Management and Leisure Studies, well range of international conference presentations. He has also spent significant periods teaching internationally in Switzerland, Slovakia and Cambodia.

 

PROF. DR. GEOFF SIMMONS PROFESSOR AT ULSTER UNIVERSITY

Geoff Simmons is a Professor at Ulster University Business School, Ulster University. Before this he was Professor of Management and Director of Research at Queens Management School, Queens University Belfast. His research is recognised as being of a world leading and internationally excellent standard. It is primarily interested in understanding digital technology implications for business and society. with specialisms in marketing strategy, big data and SME management. He has published over sixty publications, in profile outlets such as the Harvard Business Review and the Financial Times top 50 Journal, Research Policy. Professor Simmons has won best paper awards at the British Academy of Management and Irish Academy of Management conferences. His research has attracted over El million pounds of external funding, involving work with Tesco, Danske Bank UK and dunnhumby UK.
