It is our pleasure to share once again yet another update from one of our volunteering students that represented HTMi recently at the RIO Olympics 2016. We thank Ms Judy Medek for giving an insight into the duties and responsibilities that adds to her continued career portfolio development.
Memories from the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games
Hello Everyone,
My name is Judy Medek from Hungary and I completed my BSc Degree at HTMi in the winter semester of 2016. Throughout that semester, a great opportunity popped up with the help of Mr. Anthony Lack. He announced that HTMi is sending students as volunteers to the Rio Summer Olympics 2016 and we may sign up if we are interested. Naturally, I recognized the amazing opportunity and applied immediately; this was one of the best decisions of my life. I spent 40 days in the breath-taking city of Rio de Janeiro, and gained so many new experiences, which I never thought I could gain in such a short period of time.
From the 45.000 volunteers at the Rio Olympic Games, only three people were hired for the Meeting & Events department, and I was one of them. My main tasks was to handle everything in relation to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) meetings; helping coordinate how to set up the meeting rooms, preparing and controlling accreditations, setting up flags in protocol order, putting together gift kits, distributing tickets for the closing ceremony, delegating the IOC members to the Maracana Stadium and helping them out if they had any questions and so on. And obviously, having so much fun in the meantime! The attendees were so warm, friendly and helpful, even though most of them didn’t speak English.
I simply had an awesome time there, and can recommend it to anyone, who has the opportunity to be part of such a large-scale event, because the atmosphere is indescribable, and besides that the learning opportunities are tremendous.
I can’t highlight enough how grateful I am for attending this event that billions of people watched. Thank you to HTMi and especially Anthony Lack, Events Manager, for giving me this incredible opportunity.
See you in Russia and Tokyo ☺
